What are implant dentures, or snap-in dentures?

An implant denture—also known as a snap-in denture, implant-supported denture, denture implants or overdenture—is a hybrid tooth replacement solution that combines permanent titanium dental implants with traditional dentures. Unlike conventional dentures that rest on your gums and may need denture adhesives to stay in place, implant dentures “snap” onto implants placed in your jaws so your smile stays secure. With just one click, they lock into place for a stable, comfortable fit that functions like your natural smile so you can comfortably enjoy eating, speaking and living again.

At Aspen Dental, implant dentures are compatible with our most premium denture option: Signature Elite. Because of this, you can choose to get started with implant dentures now, or start with Signature Elite and upgrade them with implants whenever you’re ready. No matter where you start, implant dentures are an affordable, long-lasting option that could be right for you. To see if you’re a candidate, schedule a visit with your local office today.

How do implant dentures work?

Implant dentures combine a removable denture with permanent dental implants. The denture is designed with precise nylon components in its base so you simply click it on and off your implants, making it easy to remove to rinse in between meals, clean after a day of wear or store at night in a denture solution while you rest.

What are the benefits of implant dentures?

From mealtimes to conversations with friends, implant dentures make everyday moments easier.

Eat what you love

Implant dentures restore your ability to bite and chew comfortably so you can enjoy all your favorite meals.

Secure your smile

With implants, your smile stays put throughout the day. No more denture adhesives, slips or looseness.

Snap in and go

Designed for ease, implant dentures are simple to use. When you’re ready for the day, rinse it with water, click it in and go.

Smile affordably

Implant dentures combine the affordability of dentures with the security of implants for a smile made to last.

What’s the process for getting implant dentures?

But how do they work overall implant dentures? Below, we outline what you can expect during your implant denture journey so you know what’s ahead for your smile.

Before getting implant dentures

To start your journey, you’ll come in for a consult to confirm you’re a candidate. Then your Aspen Dental team will walk you through your treatment plan and the overall process. During your consult, we’ll:

  • Assess your oral health

  • Take precise impressions and digital mapping of your mouth

  • Use advanced imaging to create a custom treatment plan for you

If you need additional treatment to prep your jaw for implants, such as tooth extractions or bone grafting, we’ll discuss those and answer any questions.

During your implant denture visit

When you come in for your implant placement, we’ll make sure:

  • To keep you comfortable using sedation or anesthesia during your procedure.

  • You’re never without your smile. Once your implants are in place, you’ll receive an immediate prosthesis to go home with.

After your jaw has had time to heal and integrate with the implants, we’ll schedule your final fitting. Giving your smile time to heal ensures your implant denture fits and functions properly for years to come.

After getting implant dentures

  • Once your jawbone is done healing, we’ll make your custom-crafted premium implant denture and show you how to attach it to your implants.

  • By waiting until your mouth is healed, you’ll get the most snug, secure and natural fit long-term.

  • You may notice some mild soreness or discomfort as your mouth adjusts. This is normal and typically goes away quickly.

  • We also provide detailed instructions around cleaning, care and living with dentures to make adjusting easy.

After your final fitting, your team will schedule follow-up care and regular check-ins to help you maintain your new smile.

Do you miss eating your favorite foods without worry? Speaking, laughing and smiling with complete confidence? Implant dentures FAQs

The lifespan of snap-in dentures varies based on your oral hygiene and how often you come in for dental check-ups.

At Aspen Dental, our snap-in dentures come with a 7-year denture warranty and implants designed to last a lifetime² with proper care and maintenance.

²Dental implants can last a lifetime. Studies show that dental implants are likely to last at least 25 years with proper care and maintenance

Caring for implant dentures involves regularly cleaning your dentures and cleaning your implant posts. They both go hand-in-hand so you get the most out of your smile. Here’s a quick guide for cleaning your snap-in implant dentures:

  1. Remove at night: Take out your denture before bed to clean your denture and let your gums rest.

  2. Rinse and brush: Clean your denture with lukewarm water and a soft-bristled denture brush.

  3. Soak overnight: Place your denture in a non-alcoholic cleaning solution recommended by your provider to keep it fresh and prevent stains.

  4. Brush your gums and implants: Lightly brush your natural gums and around your implants with a soft-bristle toothbrush, being as thorough as you can without applying too much pressure.

  5. Rinse before reinserting: When you’re ready to use your denture again, rinse it thoroughly to remove any cleaning solution and then snap it onto your implants. You’re all set!

Implant dentures (also known as snap-in dentures) are typically supported by 2-4 strategically placed implants that anchor your denture securely in place. When you attach your denture to the implants, this is what creates that "snap" in effect, leading to improved denture stability. While they do require multiple implants, implant dentures sometimes use fewer implants than other fixed full arch implant options. They’re a stable removable solution ideal for patients seeking improved function with fewer implants than fully permanent fixed full arch options.

Additionally, because snap-in implant dentures combine the security of implants with affordability of dentures, they’re considered a more budget-friendly alternative to other fixed full-arch implant solutions.

Snap-in implant dentures are a great option for treating tooth loss, but here are some limitations to consider:

  • They may require periodic adjustments to make sure your denture fit stays comfortable long-term

  • To be considered eligible, candidates must have sufficient jawbone density to support implants. If you don’t, we’ll discuss bone-grafting treatment to help ensure implant dentures are for you.

  • Some patients may experience mild discomfort during the initial healing process, but this is normal, manageable and temporary.

Consult with your Aspen Dental provider to understand if snap-in implant dentures are the right solution for you.

Yes. Snap-in dentures stay secure while you chew, making it easier to enjoy many of the foods you love again. You can bite into apples, chew steak or eat corn on the cob without worrying about slips or a loose denture. With a proper fit and daily care, they give you the confidence to enjoy a wider range of foods compared to regular dentures.

Typically, patients that have healthy gums and enough bone to support implants are good candidates for tooth replacement options that include implants.

When you’re ready to see if you’re a candidate, your first step will be scheduling a consultation. During your visit, we’ll use a 3D scan to evaluate the volume and density of your jawbone. If your bone is thin or uneven, a graft may be recommended to improve support and long-term stability of your smile.
