Veterans' spouses and dependents follow a different dental path than veterans

It's easy to assume that if a veteran qualifies for VA benefits, their spouse or children automatically qualify, too. But dental benefits work differently.

Some veterans qualify for VA dental care based on factors such as their military service history, health status and VA dental benefit class.¹ Spouses, surviving spouses and dependent children generally follow a different benefits path. Certain family members may qualify for CHAMPVA if they meet the VA's eligibility requirements.²

What is CHAMPVA?

CHAMPVA is a health benefits program for certain spouses, surviving spouses and dependent children who meet specific VA eligibility requirements.² Eligibility is determined by the VA based on the circumstances described in the program's eligibility rules.

Does CHAMPVA cover dental care?

Routine dental care is generally not covered by CHAMPVA. Dental coverage is limited to certain situations when the dental treatment is part of appropriate care for a covered non-dental medical condition.² For routine dental coverage, eligible CHAMPVA beneficiaries can consider VADIP.³

The VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)

VADIP offers discounted private dental insurance to veterans and eligible family members. Eligible family members include current or surviving spouses and dependent children who are enrolled in CHAMPVA.³ VADIP coverage is available throughout the United States and its territories.³

VADIP isn't free dental care. You pay the full insurance premium and any required copays based on the carrier and plan you choose.³

What does VADIP typically cover?

VADIP plans cover many common dental services, which may include diagnostic services, preventive care, restorative treatment, root canals, dental surgery and emergency dental care.³ Costs and coverage details depend on the insurance carrier and plan you choose.

How do you find and enroll in a VADIP plan?

VA.gov lists the current VADIP carriers and links to their plan and enrollment information.³ Because plan options, benefits and costs can vary, review the current carrier information before enrolling.

What if you're not enrolled in CHAMPVA?

CHAMPVA eligibility depends on the VA's assessment of the veteran's record, and not every spouse or dependent qualifies. For family members, VADIP eligibility generally requires enrollment in CHAMPVA.³ However, VA.gov notes that participating VADIP insurance carriers may offer separate coverage options for dependents who aren’t CHAMPVA beneficiaries.³ Check directly with participating carriers for current options.

Does CHAMPVA cover dental implants?

CHAMPVA dental coverage is very limited. Dental treatment is covered only when it’s part of appropriate treatment for a covered non-dental medical condition.² If you need a dental implant, contact CHAMPVA before treatment to find out whether it may qualify and whether preauthorization is required.

Can I use VADIP coverage at any dental office, or only at VA facilities?

VADIP is private dental insurance, not direct dental care through a VA facility.³ VA.gov directs VADIP members to the participating insurance carriers for plan details. Check your carrier's provider information or contact the dental office before scheduling care to confirm that your plan is accepted.

Is there a waiting period before VADIP covers major dental work?

VA.gov directs you to participating VADIP carriers for current coverage details.³ Check the plan's terms for any waiting period before enrolling, especially if you expect to need major dental treatment soon. 

Can I use Aspen Dental if I have VA dental benefits?

Aspen Dental provides dental care to veterans and supports veterans' oral health through community initiatives, including an annual Day of Service offering dental care at no charge to veterans at participating locations nationwide. Day of Service is available to the veteran in your family, not to spouses or dependents directly — any veteran who has served in any branch of the military can apply.

Participation is limited to select Aspen Dental offices, and not all services are covered in full. Veterans are approved for specific procedures based on a limited exam, and only approved services are not billed to the patient.
