Why sugar-free energy drinks still damage your teeth

The "sugar-free" label means the drink doesn't contain the sugars that feed cavity-causing bacteria. But acid is a different problem. Acidic drinks can wear away enamel even when they contain no sugar.1


Most sugar-free energy drinks contain citric acid, which gives them their sharp, tangy taste. Many also contain phosphoric acid or tartaric acid. Testing of beverages sold in the United States found that several energy drinks had pH levels close to 3.0, well below the point at which tooth enamel begins to soften.2 Pure water has a pH of 7.0, while enamel starts to soften at about pH 5.5. That means many energy drinks are acidic enough to begin wearing away your enamel.


What actually causes the damage?

Every time you drink something acidic, the acid temporarily softens your enamel. Your saliva helps neutralize the acid and repair the enamel through a process called remineralization. But when your teeth are exposed to acid too often, your saliva can't keep up. Over time, the enamel becomes thinner, weaker and begins to wear away.

  • Drink it in one sitting instead of sipping slowly. The longer your teeth stay exposed to acid, the greater the chance of enamel erosion.

  • Rinse with water afterward. Water helps wash away acid before it can keep wearing down your enamel.

  • Wait 30 minutes before brushing. Your enamel is still soft right after acid exposure and brushing too soon can wear it away more quickly.

Can I drink energy drinks after wisdom teeth removal?

No, energy drinks are not recommended after wisdom teeth removal, including sugar-free versions. The acidity can irritate healing tissue, and carbonation may disrupt the blood clot that protects the surgical site. Most providers recommend waiting at least a week before reintroducing any carbonated or acidic beverages. Can enamel erosion from energy drinks be treated?
