½ teaspoon of table salt, sea salt, or kosher salt (all work — iodized is fine)
8 ounces (1 cup) of warm water
Skip the hot water. Water that's too hot can irritate already-sensitive tissue. Warm — comfortable enough to drink — is the right temperature. Cold water won't dissolve the salt as evenly and is harsher on tender gums. Remember, always make a fresh batch right before you use it — don't mix it ahead of time and store it.
How to make a saltwater rinse — step by step
1. Measure 8 ounces of warm water into a clean cup
2. Add ½ teaspoon of salt
3. Stir until the salt is fully dissolved. Undissolved salt feels gritty and won't distribute evenly in your mouth
4. Swish gently for 15–30 seconds
5. Spit. Do not swallow
Some sources recommend adding ½ teaspoon of baking soda to help create a more alkaline environment. It's optional and not required for the rinse to work — if you'd like to try it, ask your dental provider whether it's right for your situation. Avoid essential oils, hydrogen peroxide, or other additives unless specifically recommended.
How often should you use a saltwater rinse?

One important exception — tooth extractions:
After a tooth extraction, avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours. A blood clot forms in the socket to protect the area as it heals, and forceful rinsing can dislodge it, leading to a painful condition called dry socket.
After the first 24 hours, gentle saltwater rinses are often recommended to help keep the area clean. Always follow the post-procedure instructions provided by your dentist.

A saltwater rinse supports healing and reduces temporary irritation. It does not treat the underlying problem. It will not:
Eliminate an active infection
Close or reverse a cavity
Treat an abscess
Replace prescribed antibiotics or professional dental care
Stop gum disease from progressing
Replace your daily brushing and flossing routine
If your symptoms last longer than 7–10 days, worsen instead of improving, or include swelling, throbbing, or fever — continued rinsing is not the answer. Those signs point to something that needs professional evaluation.

Should I use a saltwater rinse before or after brushing?
After brushing. Brushing loosens plaque and debris first — rinsing afterward helps clear them away and extends the cleaning effect. Using the rinse before brushing reduces its effectiveness.
Can I use distilled or bottled water instead of tap water?
Yes — and for some people it's the better choice. Tap water works fine for most adults, but if your water has a strong taste or you're rinsing an area that's particularly sensitive after a procedure, distilled or filtered water makes a clean, neutral base. Either way, always make a fresh batch right before rinsing — don't store it and reuse it later.
Can children use a saltwater rinse?
Older children who can reliably swish and spit without swallowing can typically use a saltwater rinse safely. For younger children, check with your dental provider before making it a regular part of their routine.
Is it safe to use a saltwater rinse every day?
