How to use hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash safely

When hydrogen peroxide contacts your saliva and the bacteria in your mouth, it releases oxygen — that's the fizzing you see. The oxygen burst temporarily disrupts bacteria and loosens debris. It's a straightforward chemical reaction, and it can be helpful for occasional bacterial reduction or minor gum irritation. But getting the concentration and dilution right matters.


What concentration should I use?

Use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution—the type commonly sold in brown bottles at pharmacies—and dilute it before rinsing. Do not use products with higher concentrations in your mouth because they can damage oral tissue.


How do I dilute hydrogen peroxide for mouthwash?

Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with one part water. A simple way to measure: fill half a small cup with 3% hydrogen peroxide and top it off with plain water. Swish gently for 30 to 60 seconds, then spit everything out. Never swallow the mixture. If the taste stays with you afterward, rinse once with plain water.


What are the risks of using hydrogen peroxide mouthwash?

When used correctly and only occasionally, hydrogen peroxide is safe for most adults. The risks come from using it too often or at the wrong strength.


Using hydrogen peroxide too often or without proper dilution can irritate the soft tissues in your mouth and increase tooth sensitivity. A 2020 systematic review found that hydrogen peroxide rinses may temporarily reduce plaque, gum inflammation and some oral bacteria, but the evidence is limited and they are not as effective as chlorhexidine mouthwash.¹
