What is dental fluorosis?
Dental fluorosis happens when a child gets too much fluoride while permanent teeth are still forming under the gums, usually from birth through about age 8. Too much fluoride during this stage can change how tooth enamel develops. When the teeth come in, those changes may appear as faint white lines or spots. More noticeable cases can cause brown stains or an uneven enamel surface.
Dental fluorosis cannot develop after permanent teeth have finished forming. Older children, teens and adults cannot develop new dental fluorosis from fluoride exposure because the enamel is already formed.¹
Skeletal fluorosis: How does it develop in adults?
Unlike dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis can develop at any age. It develops after years of exposure to very high levels of fluoride and affects the bones and joints. In the United States, skeletal fluorosis is rare.²
What causes skeletal fluorosis in adults?
Skeletal fluorosis can develop after years of exposure to very high levels of fluoride. It is more common in parts of India, China and Africa where groundwater naturally contains high amounts of fluoride. In the United States, skeletal fluorosis is less common.
Fluoride intake can also come from dietary sources like tea, particularly strong or large amounts consumed over many years. Excessive fluoride from any combined source, such as water, supplements, or diet, has been linked to skeletal fluorosis in some adults.² Drinking typical amounts of commercially prepared tea is not expected to cause skeletal fluorosis.
What are the symptoms of skeletal fluorosis?
Early skeletal fluorosis causes joint stiffness and aching, often in the spine or larger joints. As the condition progresses, it can limit mobility and, in advanced cases, lead to structural changes in the skeleton. What if I already have dental fluorosis?
Many adults have tooth discoloration that developed during childhood, particularly those who grew up in areas with higher fluoride water concentrations or used fluoride supplements without close guidance. Does dental fluorosis get worse over time?
