Dental insurance that covers implants
Overview
Dental implants can be a long-term way to replace missing teeth. They can also be a bigger expense and insurance coverage isn’t always straightforward. Aspen Dental can review your benefits, explain what may be covered and walk you through costs before you start treatment.
Coverage varies, but many plans help pay for parts of implant treatment like the crown, extractions, or bone grafting.
Aspen Dental accepts most dental insurance plans and can verify your coverage before your visit. Please note we do not accept Medicaid.
No insurance or limited coverage? Ask about financing options and the Aspen Dental Savings Plan¹ options.

Does dental insurance cover implants?
Dental insurance plans vary a lot, and implants are often treated differently than fillings or cleanings. Some plans cover certain components (like the crown) or may help more when implants are considered medically necessary.
Bring your insurance card to your Aspen Dental office. We’ll check your benefits and explain what’s covered and what’s not before you commit.
What does my dental implant insurance cover?
Most plans don’t cover every part of an implant, but many help pay for services around it. Here’s what coverage often looks like.
What insurance may cover:
Implant crown: the visible tooth replacement
Abutment: the connector between the implant and crown
Extractions: removing a tooth that can’t be saved
Bone grafting: when needed to support the implant
X-rays, CT scans, exams: diagnostics and planning
What insurance may not cover:
Implant post: the titanium “screw” placed in the jaw
Premium materials or cosmetic upgrades
Full-mouth implant systems: may be limited or partially covered

How do I compare dental insurance plans for implant coverage?
When you’re shopping for a plan, focus less on the monthly premium and more on what the plan pays for major services, waiting periods and insurance maximums or payouts.
Implant coverage (not just prosthetics or bridges)
Higher annual maximums for major services
Shorter waiting periods for major work
Coverage for crowns and abutments
A clear breakdown of deductibles and percentages paid
Network flexibility (PPO plans often give more options)

When are dental implants considered medically necessary?
Some plans are more likely to help cover implant treatment when there’s a medical reason, not just a preference.
Tooth loss from trauma or injury
Unable to wear dentures
Bone loss or jaw deterioration
A tooth can’t be restored (fractured roots, severe damage)
Speech or chewing problems from missing teeth
Risk to surrounding teeth
Your Aspen Dental dentist can help document medical necessity if needed for pre-authorization.
Dental implant insurance FAQs
Yes—some dental insurance plans do cover implants with no waiting period, but they are less common and usually come with higher monthly premiums. Most plans still require a waiting period for major services, so it’s important to review the policy details and confirm implant coverage before enrolling in a plan.
You can use your dental insurance to pay for implants by checking which parts of the treatment your plan covers. Before treatment, ask your Aspen Dental office to verify your benefits and provide a cost estimate so you know exactly what your insurance will pay and what your out-of-pocket costs will be.
Insurance may only cover certain components of implant treatment, such as the crown. The implant post may not be covered or may be partially covered depending on the policy.
Yes. Dental implants are generally eligible under FSA and HSA accounts, helping reduce out-of-pocket expenses. However, check with your HSA provider and insurance benefits to verify if they can use the funds for implants.
