I had a glossectomy done (tongue removal) a couple years ago due to tongue cancer. My mouth is very sensitive to pain. The devices inserted into my mouth during dental x-rays are very painful to me. I am 71 years young, exercise regularly and in very good shape for my age. Over the years, I have never, ever had to take more than 6 x-rays on any or my prior dental visits. I moved to Niceville from Louisiana in January 2026. I had x-rays done only 5 months before my appointment with Aspen. When making my appointment, I explained my situation asked if they would be able to use my x-rays and chart from my Louisiana dentist taken only five months earlier. They said yes, and asked me to email them, which I did. After completing the medical history, I was taken back to get X-rays done. I had reminded them that I had already sent them recent x-rays and preferred not to do them again this soon. I really was their to get a cleaning. They responded that they wanted to do their own x-rays. If that is the case, then why put me through the trouble of getting x-rays and my chart from my prior dentist, if thy wanted to do their own x-rays anyway? After having 25 painful x-rays done, they told me I only needed to do 5 more because some of the x-rays did not come out clearly. I said it's too painful. I said I could no longer stand the pain. They called the doctor in. He was insensitive to my pain and said they needed to do the remaining x-rays. I told the doctor I could no longer stand the pain and just asked for a cleaning. He said they could not do that. So, I told them I could not stand the pain and could not do anymore. The doctor said without the rest of the x-rays, they could not do the cleaning. So, we agreed to end the visit without my cleaning. After giving it much thought, I believe that they were getting paid by my Humana Gold based on the number of x-rays. I spoke to a very close friend who had treated me in the past. She is a dental hygenist and confirmed my believe that Aspen being a "corporate" franchise business, with operations all over the country, is into insurance billings and not so much concerned about the patients as a smaller family dentist would be. Needless to say, I should have read the reviews before scheduling an appointment. I am taking the thsi time to share my experience to help others who do read the reviews, what my experience has been.
Dr. Speir was great. He took the time to explain all of my options, answered my questions, and gave honest recommendations about what he felt was the best treatment plan. I never felt pressured and felt comfortable with the decisions we made. The extractions went smoothly, and both Dr. Speir and his staff were kind, professional, and helped put me at ease. Overall, it was a much better experience than I expected, and I’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a dentist who takes the time to genuinely care for their patients.

He continues to pursue advanced training in implant dentistry to offer modern treatments. Originally from Mississippi, Dr. Speir now lives in Crestview with his wife and their dogs. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, exploring new restaurants, and cheering on the Miami Hurricanes.
