With local anesthesia, your Aspen Dental provider will keep you as comfortable possible. During your procedure, you may feel pressure as your tooth is removed. After your procedure, mild sensitivity is common and should fade after a short period of time. Your provider will provide you detailed after-care instructions and, if needed, medication to manage any discomfort.

Most patients feel much better within a few days. Surgical extractions, especially for wisdom teeth, may require a week or more to fully recovery. Healing is different for everyone and depends on things like your overall health, the complexity of your extraction and how well you follow after-care instructions.

You can usually remove gauze once bleeding has stopped, which may take a few hours after your procedure. Your provider will give you specific instructions to help you heal safely. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure you fully recover.

If your procedure involves sedation, fasting for several hours ahead of your visit may be required. Your provider will let you know exactly how to prepare. Soft foods are recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours. Options include yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soft pastas and smoothies. As healing progresses, you can reintroduce solid foods when it feels right for you. Make sure to avoid crunchy, sticky or very hot foods until cleared by your provider.

Follow all after-care instructions given to you by your provider. Typically, you’ll be guided to: Avoid smoking or vaping, keep your head elevated, use ice to reduce swelling. Once cleared by your provider, maintain good oral hygiene by brushing gently around the area of your extraction.
