Having a dental emergency? Here’s what to do

Aspen Dental is equipped to handle unexpected dental emergencies, offering the ability to call, book online, or simply walk in to get the urgent care you need. The goal is to get you pain-free and prepared for follow-up care.

Ongoing discomfort or sharp pain is not something you need to live with. While over-the-counter pain relievers and avoiding very hot or cold foods may offer temporary relief, if you’re experiencing a severe toothache or ongoing pain, call or walk into the office immediately. Your local Aspen Dental provider will then identify the root cause of the pain—issues such as lost fillings, hot or cold sensitivity, or a dental infection—and provide a plan to protect your tooth and manage your pain.

If you have a broken, chipped or cracked tooth, it should be addressed immediately. The rough edges of your tooth can cause further damage to your mouth and, if left untreated, the damage to your tooth can worsen. As a first aid measure, you can gently rinse your mouth and cover any sharp edges with dental wax until you can come in for a visit. Make sure to avoid hard foods until you visit your emergency walk in Aspen Dental dentist.

If a tooth has been knocked out, immediately pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface). Gently rinse in a bowl of water or milk—do not scrub it, and attempt to place it back in the socket, if possible. If you cannot reinsert it, keep your tooth moist—ideally in milk—and come in right away. The sooner you come in, the more likely we can help restore your knocked-out tooth. When you visit your local Aspen Dental office, our team will conduct a full exam to assess the damage and begin necessary repairs.

Bleeding or swollen gums may be an early sign that you have a dental infection or gum inflammation. These signs of swelling can signal a severe issue, so it’s important to get care as soon as possible. Before you come in, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to help manage any bleeding. If you have a dental infection, coming in immediately can help prevent the spread of the infection and avoid further health problems that affect the rest of your body. You can either walk in to your local office or schedule ahead for an evaluation and treatment. Your local Aspen Dental care team can diagnose the issue and begin treatment quick for gum infection or inflammation to get you comfortable again.

If you have a broken denture, please do not attempt to fix it on your own. Instead, bring your denture into your local Aspen Dental office immediately. With fast denture repairs, we can either help you restore your denture in no time, or if needed, help match you with the right replacement denture. During your visit, your local team will assess the damage and provide a personalized care plan based on your needs.

Pain in the upper teeth can sometimes be related to sinus issues rather than a tooth problem. If you are experiencing pain that you suspect is related to sinus pressure, your Aspen Dental provider can conduct an exam, often with an X-ray, to check your teeth and rule out a dental issue, before recommending appropriate follow-up care.

Swelling or pain near the back of the jaw is a common sign of issues with wisdom teeth. An emergency dental exam can confirm the status of your wisdom teeth to help inform the best next steps to get you relief. When you come in, your Aspen Dental provider will outline what’s recommended for your needs, which may include emergency tooth extraction to alleviate the pain and prevent future issues.

How much does emergency dental care cost?

The cost of your care varies based on the emergency treatment you need, location of your care and if you have dental insurance. With dental insurance, your plan may cover some urgent procedures, but the exact amount is dependent on your coverage. Check your plan details with your insurance provider or explore which dental insurance providers are accepted by your local Aspen Dental provider. Please note, Medicaid is not accepted at any Aspen Dental location.
