Knocked-out tooth? 5 steps to take before seeing a dentist
If your tooth has been knocked out, you have a 60-minute window to save it. Walk in to Aspen Dental for emergency care.

If your adult tooth has been knocked out, acting quickly can help improve the chances of saving it.
When a tooth comes out, the nerves and blood vessels are affected, but the surrounding ligaments may still allow the tooth to reattach if it is handled and stored properly. Use this step-by-step guide to care for a knocked-out tooth and seek dental care as soon as possible.
Aspen Dental offers same-day and walk-in appointments when available, with locations nationwide to help you get evaluated quickly.
Immediate steps to take for a knocked-out tooth
Time plays an important role when a tooth is completely knocked out.
Follow these steps as soon as possible:
1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the top part) and avoid touching the root.
2. Rinse it gently with water if it is dirty, but do not scrub it.
3. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place.
4. Keep it moist. If you cannot reinsert it, place the tooth in cold milk or a tooth preservation kit. You can also place it in a container with saliva or coconut water. Avoid storing it in tap water. Do not wrap the tooth in tissue or cloth, as this can dry it out.
5. Visit a dental provider as soon as possible for evaluation and stabilization.
Emergency treatment options for a knocked-out tooth at Aspen Dental
When you arrive at your local Aspen Dental office, your care team will evaluate the tooth and surrounding area to determine the best next step.
Reimplantation
If the tooth is in good condition, your provider may place it back into the socket.
Splinting
A splint may be used to stabilize the tooth by supporting it with nearby teeth. This helps hold it in place while the surrounding tissue heals, typically over a couple of weeks.
Root canal therapy
In many cases, a root canal is recommended after the tooth is replanted. This is because the inner tissue of the tooth may not recover after the injury.
This treatment helps remove damaged tissue and reduce the risk of infection while preserving the tooth structure.
What if the tooth can’t be saved?
If the tooth cannot be reattached, your Aspen Dental provider will explain replacement options such as a dental flipper, bridge or implant to help restore your smile and function.
Cost of emergency tooth reimplantation
We understand that unexpected dental situations can bring questions about cost.
Aspen Dental provides a clear, detailed estimate before treatment begins so you understand your options. Costs vary depending on the extent of the injury and the type of treatment needed.
We accept many dental insurance plans and offer flexible financing options. The Aspen Dental Savings Plan is also available for patients without insurance.
The Aspen Dental Savings Plan is not insurance. Please see plan terms and conditions for details.
Please note, Aspen Dental does not accept Medicaid.
FAQs about knocked-out teeth
Can a knocked-out tooth be put back in?
In many cases, a permanent tooth can be reinserted if action is taken quickly. The chances of success are highest when the tooth is placed back in the socket immediately and under at least 60 minutes.
Keeping the tooth moist and handling it carefully can help improve outcomes.
What is the best way to keep a knocked-out tooth moist?
Cold milk is often recommended because it helps protect the cells on the root surface¹. If milk is not available, saliva or coconut water can also be used.
Avoid tap water when possible, as it may affect the root surface.
How long can a tooth be out of the mouth and still be saved?
A tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is treated within about an hour. After that time, the likelihood of successful reattachment may decrease.
Even if more time has passed, it is still important to seek care so your provider can evaluate your options.
Is a knocked-out tooth a dental emergency?
Yes, a knocked-out tooth should be evaluated as soon as possible. Acting quickly can help improve the chances of saving the tooth.
What if I cannot find the tooth?
You should still see your Aspen Dental provider. They can evaluate the area and discuss replacement options if needed. Many times when a tooth gets knocked out, the surrounding teeth and bone can also be affected, requiring evaluation and care.
Will I need a root canal after my tooth is put back in?
In many cases, a root canal is recommended after the tooth is stabilized. This helps prevent infection and supports long-term function.
How much does it cost to fix a knocked-out tooth?
Costs vary depending on the treatment required. Your Aspen Dental care team will provide a clear breakdown before treatment begins.
Flexible financing options and the Aspen Dental Savings Plan may be available to help make care more manageable.
