Oral Health America (OHA), the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) and other oral health supporters assembled on Capitol Hill in September to address the impact of oral health disparities on America’s health. The event was part of OHA’s commitment to improving access to dental care.

An OHA survey, sponsored by Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait and Plackers, discovered that 35% of those who regularly visit the dentist, often those from low income, less educated, and minority households, have cut back on dental care.

In this difficult economic environment, it’s not too hard to understand why regular dental visits sometimes fall by the wayside.

At Aspen Dental, dental health professionals recognize that it may be difficult for Americans to pursue the dental care they need, especially those with limited resources. In fact, the Aspen Dental model is centered around creating access to care for patients who have traditionally been neglected, from offering convenient locations and extended hours to giving patients options to pay for their dental care to make it manageable on their household finances.

Partnering with organizations that share our goal of improved access to care is a critical. That’s why we’re a proud supporter of Oral Health America’s Fall for Smiles® initiative. On September 1, OHA launched the second annual Fall for Smiles® campaign in order to remind policymakers and the public about the importance of dental care, including making healthy food choices, regular dental visits and regular at-home dental care regimen.

We’d like to start putting a face on our blog so you can get to know us a little better. Let’s start by introducing you to Maureen Howes, RDH, MS.

Maureen has been director of hygiene services at Aspen Dental Management, Inc. since 2006 and is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Maureen has more than 25 years of experience in the dental industry and is an expert on all aspects of dental hygiene. Not only does she serve as a dental hygiene examiner with the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, Maureen also provides continuing education to dental professionals. She is passionate about educating individuals about the benefits of consistent, daily routine of oral health care.

We sat down with Maureen to ask her some questions about how she got her start in dentistry.

Q: What is your earliest dentist memory?

A: Like most patients of “my generation,” as a kid I recall my dental office smelling like a mixture of “clove gum and Listerine”. Fortunately dentistry has progressed a lot since those days.

Q: How did you pick dental hygiene as your career?

A: I had braces as a teenager, and I found myself fascinated by my surroundings at each orthodontic appointment. I was intrigued by the science of dentistry and attracted to a profession where I could help people every day.

Q: What’s the one thing you wish all dental patients would know?

A: I wish patients would know how important it is to be proactive with their dental health and not wait until “something hurts” to seek care.

Q: What’s the one thing you wish you had known as a dental student?

A: I wish I had known how difficult economic times would create such an enormous barrier to care for so many patients.

Q: There are so many toothpastes on the market today, each claiming to do something different. What kind of toothpaste should people look for?

A: The most important ingredient is fluoride. Foods, beverages and plaque create an acidic environment in our mouths and we need fluoride to protect against the decay that this acid causes. Beyond that, it is most important that the patient likes the taste- so they will brush for a full two minutes in the morning and especially before bed at night.

Q: Are there special dental hygiene rules for denture wearers?

A: It is very important for denture wearers to remove their dentures every night and clean all underlying the tissues in their mouth. They should clean their dentures with a denture brush and keep their dentures moist with a fresh supply of water in a covered denture bath each night.

Q: How do you interact with hygienists in Aspen Dental practices across the country?

A: At Aspen we have an intranet page designed specifically for dental hygienists. I post announcements and provide links to keep my team abreast of current dental research, products, continuing education opportunities, etc. They also have a blog site where they can share ideas with more than 300 colleagues across the United States.

An article earlier this year in The New York Times, “The Claim: Dental Cavities Can Be Contagious”, found that like the flu, you can “catch a cavity.” Research studies show that caregivers may pass cavity-causing bacteria to children and oral bacteria can be passed between couples.

Dr. Margaret Mitchell, a cosmetic dentist in Chicago, mentions in the article:
“In one instance, a patient in her 40s who had never had a cavity suddenly developed two cavities and was starting to get some gum disease,” she said. She learned the woman had started dating a man who hadn’t been to a dentist in 18 years and had gum disease.”

Needless to say, we thought it would be a good idea to clear up a couple of the common myths surrounding dental hygiene and cavities. Here’s what Maureen Howes, RDH, MS, has to say and offers as a review of dental tips:

1. I won’t get cavities if I brush and floss my teeth twice every day.
Myth, but…
There are no guarantees in life but brushing and flossing twice a day will certainly go a long way, especially if you do so at night. That’s because during sleep, the mouth produces less saliva, which allows bacteria to proliferate on teeth and gums.

2. Chewing gum is always bad.
Myth.
Actually, chewing certain sugarless gums can prevent cavities by increasing the flow of saliva in the mouth. In 2007, the American Dental Association awarded its Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley’s Orbit, Eclipse and Extra chewing gums for helping to prevent cavities.

3. I’ve gotten cavities in the past, but probably because I have a sweet tooth and love sugary foods.
Myth.
Sugary foods are usually blamed for cavities but the real reason is bacteria. That’s because they live on food particles left in your mouth. The acid they produce eats away teeth. To prevent cavities from starting, avoid eating sticky candies and foods and drinking acidic beverages like soda and juice. Instead, drink water throughout the day to flush away plaque and bacteria – and make sure to floss.

4. I need to replace my fillings regularly.
Fact. Fillings can degrade over time and become leaky.
Your dentist will monitor your fillings and will let you know if they need to be replaced.

5. Once I go to the dentist and get treatment for a cavity, the decaying stops.
Myth.
You still need to practice great oral hygiene at home and watch what you eat.

6. Lots of acidic food can lead to cavities.
Fact.
Proper nutrition plays an important role in good dental health. Eating nutritional snacks and limiting the amount of sugary drinks will help to prevent plaque from forming on teeth. This includes sugary food, such as cookies, cakes, soft drinks and candy, but also includes pretzels, crackers, bananas, potato chips and breakfast cereals. Bacteria in your mouth turn the sugars in these foods into acids. The more frequently you eat each day, the more frequently your teeth are exposed to acids.

7. A sensitive tooth means I probably have a cavity.
Sometimes.
Hygienists and dentists often hear complaints about sensitive teeth. That’s why so it’s important to visit a dentist. Many cavities can only be detected by a dentist or a dental x-ray. Visiting a dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings is a key factor in preventing cavities and your dental team may be able to offer specialized rinses, pastes, and toothbrushes to combat tooth sensitivity.

8. Kids are more likely to get cavities than adults.
Myth.
Many people think cavities only affect children, but changes that occur with aging make cavities an adult problem, too. Many older adults may have missed out on the benefits of fluoride and modern preventive dental care when they were growing up and often have a number of dental fillings. Over time, these fillings may weaken and can fracture, allowing bacteria to accumulate in the tiny crevices, causing tooth decay. Many adults also take multiple medications that cause a decrease in the flow of saliva. This dry mouth means “less rinsing action” and increased likelihood of cavities.

How can I best prevent cavities?
A regular routine of oral care at home, everyday, will go a long way to prevent cavities. That means brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing at least twice a day, especially before you go to bed.

So, can I get cavities by kissing someone?
Rather than answer that directly, I’ll leave you with a quote from Fares Elias, DDS, president of the Academy of General Dentistry. (Yahoo! Health – June 7, 2011)

Saliva and the mouth are full of viruses and bacteria, including some that cause cavities. Kissing a partner who is actively infected with cavity-causing bacteria can cause a person who previously had a low concentration of these bacteria to ‘catch’ a cavity, due to the extra dose of bacteria from kissing—particularly if that person has poor oral habits that set the stage for tooth decay

For more, check out the Florida Today article posted on our Aspen Dental Facebook page, which discusses how dental visits can detect more than just cavities. Additionally, here are further cavity prevention tips from the American Dental Association.

I was reading my Sunday paper a few weeks ago and saw an interesting article from Parade Magazine that talks about secrets to a bright smile. At the dentist’s office, you often hear about brushing and flossing as a way to keeping your gums healthy; however, the Parade Magazine article passes on findings from a new research. This new research shows ways to help keep gums “in the pink” through eating these five foods.

Here’s what Parade Magazine says about the “5 surprising secrets to a great smile”:

1. Salmon
This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation all over the body, including the gums. A study found that people who ate the most omega-3’s slashed their risk of gingivitis by up to 20 percent.

2. Strawberries
They’re bursting with vitamin C, which builds collagen, an important component of healthy gum tissue. In fact, people who consume less than 60 milligrams of C each day (the amount in six large strawberries) are 150 percent more likely to develop gingivitis. But stay away from fizzy vitamin supplement drinks; they have been shown to erode tooth enamel.

3. Whole-Grain Bread
Whole grains contain iron and B vitamins—nutrients essential to gum health. One large study found that eating three servings daily reduced the risk of gum disease by 23 percent. Barley, oatmeal, and brown rice count, too.

4. Green Tea
Hot or iced, this brew is brimming with antioxidants that kill the bacteria that lead to gingivitis. Bonus: The beverage also wipes out the germs that cause bad breath.

5. Pistachios
These nuts are rich in the antioxidant CoQ10, shown to fight gum inflammation. If you already have gingivitis, ask your dentist or doctor whether you could benefit from a CoQ10 supplement.

Surprised? Many are also surprised at the fact that 75% of Americans are affected by some form of periodontal disease (according to the American Academy of Periodontology). Diet plays an important part of overall oral health, and maintaining a healthy diet is a simple way to help keep your gums healthy. As a precaution, check-in with your dentist regularly in order to catch warning signs for gum diseases to maintain your best smile.

The state of the economy is forcing many people to make difficult choices, even when it comes to their health. People are putting off medical care, and that includes their dental care as well.

Practicing good oral hygiene and receiving regular dental exams are critical to good oral health. But quite a few Aspen Dental dentists are telling me that patients are struggling with the decision on whether or not to move forward with the care they need and are delaying everything from cleanings and fillings to dentures to treatment of gum disease. These are decisions that can prove costly down the road from a health perspective, and a cost perspective.

Considering the link between gum disease and certain health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and stroke, patients should try to make regular visits to the dentist just as much of a priority as regular visits to their primary care physician.

Ultimately, seeking preventative care and taking care of small dental problems before they become big problems really pays off.

Here’s a video on what you can expect from your first visit to Aspen Dental. Click on this link below:
What You Can Expect on Your First Visit to Aspen Dental

According to a report by Oral Health America, early dental treatment is cost effective. In fact, the cost of providing preventive dental treatment is estimated to be 10 times less than the cost of managing symptoms of dental disease in a hospital emergency room. In addition, the report notes that improving oral health by multiple preventative approaches, including periodontal (gum) disease management, saves more than $4 billion per year in treatment costs.

Advice for Denture Patients
When we talk about regular oral care, I remind people that this is just as important for the nearly 50 million Americans who wear full or partial dentures. Even patients who have no natural teeth should have their mouth examined annually not only for signs of oral cancer, but also for proper denture fit. Tissues in the mouth change over time, and bone and gum ridges shrink, which can result in ill-fitting dentures; this can make eating uncomfortable or downright painful.

The American Dental Association recommends that dentures be replaced every five to seven years, but Aspen Dental dentists find that people keep the same set of dentures for much longer.

Another key concern for people with dentures is the use of denture adhesives. While adhesives can help dentures feel more stable and secure, long-term excessive use can potentially pose health risks. Patients should closely follow labeling instructions for denture adhesive products. If dentures feel loose or cause discomfort, it is important to contact your dentist as soon as possible about an adjustment or replacement.

In a nutshell, and I’m sure you’ve heard time and time again – Is to have regular visits with your dentist. This will save you money and pain in the long term… a winning solution for your wallet and teeth. Aspen Dental dentists and office teams work hard to help patients get the care they need—and make it affordable, too—even in this economic climate.

We are always on the lookout to provide the best service for Aspen Dental patients. After talking to patients as part of our research, we found three things that matter most: accessibility, affordability and convenience.

We took these three things to heart – below are a few of the ways Aspen Dental addresses what’s important to you:

Accessibility: Everyone nowadays seems to lead a hectic life. Even calling for an appointment seems like a bothersome task. That’s why Aspen Dental offers a way to book appointments online. By following this link, you can find a nearby dentist, see available appointment times that work for you and book the actual appointment. It’s easy—and you can do it when you want.

Of course, if you prefer to call to make an appointment, feel free. The number is 1-800-ASPEN-DENTAL (1-800-277-3633).

Affordability: Aspen Dental believes that everyone deserves a healthy smile. We also understand that cost is an important consideration when getting the dental and denture treatment you need. That’s why Aspen Dental offices offer a variety of flexible payment programs. To make it even easier, you can find information and apply for financing from home before you even come to the office.

Aspen Dental payment options

When you visit AspenDental.com, be sure to check out online bonus saving offers. They’re regularly updated with new offers and coupons that are good at most Aspen Dental locations. Check it out right here!

Convenience: Our website is designed to help you find what you need when you need it. At AspenDental.com, you’ll see links to schedule your appointment, information on dental and denture services, office locations, commitment to patient satisfaction, and more. Aspen Dental wants your office visits to be comfortable. Part of that is done through providing helpful information before you even come into the office. Some helpful links to check out include “what to expect during your first visit” and “common questions about your appointment”.

Above all, Aspen Dental doctors and office teams are committed to providing you with great service and care, every time.

Today, with the opening of new Aspen Dental practices in Sun City, Florida, Davenport, Iowa, Arcadia, Arizona and Roseburg, Oregon, patients can get the dental care they need at 300 Aspen Dental offices in 22 states.

This impressive milestone gives me the opportunity to thank all the Aspen Dental doctors and office teams across the country and the talented people who support them from our Practice Support Center in Syracuse, New York. And just as important, it allows me to thank the hundreds of thousands of patients who have placed their trust in the outstanding dentists and office teams in the communities served by Aspen Dental.

When the first Aspen Dental office opened in 1998, there was an unmet need for affordable, high-quality dental care across the United States. Thirteen years later, that need has never been greater.

And the fact that Aspen Dental practices are making a positive difference every day in the lives of more and more people across the country makes this milestone even more special.

Aspen Dental practices hear a lot of interesting stories from patients regarding their dental experiences in-and-out-of the office. In one particularly unusual instance, an Aspen Dental patient woke up to find her dentures in pieces on the floor of her bedroom, apparently chewed up by her pet Yorkie! Fortunately she came into her Aspen Dental office and was able to get a brand new pair of dentures the very same day.

We wanted to share our top dental tips on keeping your dentures in tip top shape (and intact):
1)	Keep your dentures in a safe place, away from pets (Yorkies in particular) and children
2)	Clean your dentures every day (after each meal if possible)
3)	Brush your dentures with a denture brush, not a regular brush as it can damage the surface of the denture teeth
4)	Remember to brush your gums, tongue and palate every day to remove plaque and to keep the inside of your mouth clean and healthy
5)	Dentures can dry out and lose their shape over time. Whenever they are not in your mouth, place them in a denture soaking solution or water
6)	Remember to come into Aspen Dental for periodic adjustments and checkups to assure your dentures remain comfortable and last as long as possible.

Come into any Aspen Dental location for help with damaged or lost dentures, or if your dentures just aren’t fitting properly. With an onsite denture in every office, most repairs can be made while you wait.

Check out our website for some more commonly asked questions on dentures!

By Guest Blogger Dr. Michael Dickerson, Managing Clinical Director, Aspen Dental in Troy, Ohio

As clinical director of the Aspen Dental office in Troy, Ohio, I was recently interviewed by the Dayton Daily News for an article focusing on the recession’s impact on dental care. Our state’s Department of Health has identified dental care as, “the No. 1 unmet health care need among low-income adults, and especially for older adults.”

We welcome our state’s recognition of this serious public health issue and want to be part of the solution. Our purpose and commitment at Aspen Dental is to help patients get the dental care they need. So we have programs in place to assist families juggling the demands of household budgets and the costs of regular dental care.

In this difficult economic environment, keeping up with dentist visits is often the first health care decision delayed. Most people just don’t consider staying up with their dental care to be a life or death situation. Unfortunately, falling behind on your regular visits to the dentist can turn out to be both an expensive and unhealthy mistake. Preventive care costs so much less than reconstructive treatment, and decaying teeth can dramatically affect a person’s quality of life. Tooth decay can hurt your appearance, is a major cause of bad breath, and along with gum disease has been linked to heart disease and stroke.

Here in the Buckeye State, for example, where the recession is still a reality, about 39 percent of our residents don’t have dental insurance. That discourages a lot of people from making an appointment to see their dentist. In fact, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, which the article cited, “one third of Americans skipped dental care check-ups in the past year because of cost.”

Aspen Dental offices like mine in Troy, Ohio offer convenient payment plans in addition to working all insurance plans. As we explain to our patients, many of whom are struggling with financial challenges, a little financial planning now can help you avoid much higher costs and medical problems down the road. The best decision to make is to come in for an exam – - for patients without insurance the initial exam at Aspen Dental locations is free at many locations- – and discuss the care you need for your long-term health.. At the same time, you can consider the payment options available to make care affordable.

We all understand that changing the oil in our automobile’s engine at recommended intervals makes great sense, for our cars and our wallets. Your mouth deserves no less attention. Let your dentist help you get you back on track today.

Aspen Dental dentists and staff work hard every day to provide their patients with access to comprehensive dental care and quality service. But they also love giving their communities a reason to smile.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, dentists, hygienists and dental assistants at Aspen Dental offices in DeWitt and Camillus, NY, teamed up with the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HW-SC) to provide a day of free dental services to approximately 50 Syracuse-area high school students. Dental hygiene students from the State University of New York at Canton also donated their time and talents. This was the second consecutive year of the program, which provides students with x-rays, basic cleanings and fluoride treatments. In total, these services added up to nearly $15,000 in free dental care.

Understanding the connection between a healthy mouth and student performance is critical. Many people aren’t aware that poor oral health and dental-related pain can negatively impact a student’s academic performance, distracting them from their studies or causing them to miss class altogether. In fact, this day of free dental service fell during National Children’s Dental Health Month, an annual observance sponsored by the American Dental Association to raise awareness about the importance of developing good oral health habits at an early age.

Caption: Dr. Rachel Clay of Aspen Dental and Rayelle Church, 13, of the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HW-SC) are all smiles after Rayelle’s examination on Saturday, February 19. Aspen Dental is a strong supporter of HW-SC, providing a four-year, $50,000 grant to support their efforts in the Syracuse City School District.
